K13: Tragedy on the Gareloch

Booking Necessary: Yes

Fairfield Heritage’s Ian Johnston recounts the harrowing and dramatic 55 hour rescue operation of the doomed K13 submarine, following an incident which would claim the lives of Fairfield workers and submariners alike.

This digital presentation and narration has been made available to mark the conservation repair of the K13 memorial in Elder Park during 2021, securing its future as an important monument commemorating those aboard the K13 during its ill-fated sea trial.

Want to know more after watching this film? You can learn more about submarines and ships built in Govan by visiting Fairfield Heritage. Head on to neighbouring Elder Park where you’ll see many links to Govan’s illustrious and important shipbuilding history, including the K13 memorial.

The restoration and repair work to Elder Park’s entrance way including the K13 memorial is being delivered as part of Govan Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative in collaboration with Glasgow Building Preservation Trust with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and Glasgow City Council.
