Intergenerational Spaces and Communities

Day: Friday
Time: 1pm – 2pm
Booking Necessary: Yes

Intergenerational practice can work in any setting or community. Created in the 1970’s in Japan it aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations and contributes to building more cohesive communities. Intergenerational practice is inclusive, building on the positive resources that the younger and older have to offer each other and those around them. In this digital session you will learn how to adapt intergenerational practice within your work, the benefits and examples of intergenerational projects and spaces. This is vital in the post COVID-19 world as intergenerational spaces can bring generations together who have spent time apart safely, as well as tackling loneliness, isolation, improving physical health and our environment.

This session will be led by Kate Samuels, Communications and Policy Officer of Generations Working Together, who are the national centre of intergenerational Scotland and a charity with 3,600 members. The charity is based in Merchant City, Glasgow. In 2020 they called for Scotland to become the first intergenerational nation and lead the National Intergenerational Week. This is the first time the charity is participating in Doors Open Day.
