The Faculty of Procurators (or lawyers) in Glasgow was established before 1668.
The building, into which the Faculty moved in 1857, is a two-storeyed building with three façades designed by the architect Charles Wilson (1810-1863). Wilson also designed some of Glasgow’s finest Italianate buildings.
The building houses a significant collection of legal texts and is still used as a working space by lawyers, so it is usually only open to members.
Things to look out for on Doors Open Day –
• The keystones above each of the 14 windows and plasterwork inside depict the faces of famous lawyers.
• The crest of the Royal Faculty incorporates St. Mungo and appears throughout the building in many forms.
• The Main Library on the 1st floor is described as “one of the most exquisite halls in the West of Scotland”. Nine busts of former members of the Faculty add character to the library.
• The Small Library with its “bicentenary window”, commissioned from John K. Clark for the bicentenary of the Royal Faculty’s first Royal Charter in 1996, and mortification boards commemorating bequests to the Faculty’s charity.
