St Margaret’s, Newlands, is a prominent landmark in the Southside of Glasgow. It is a B-listed building that invariably surprises first-time visitors. Recognised by travellers along Kilmarnock Road, Doors Open Days brings the opportunity to venture in and experience a quality of design and construction that is built to last, all originally made possible by a gift of land from Sir John Stirling Maxwell of Pollok House. This church is constructed in the distinctive Romanesque style, with crafted thick walls, small windows, rounded arches, and a barrel-vaulted roof. Additional features include:
A continental-style double apse.
Superb mosaics.
A magnificent collection of stained-glass windows in a range of artistic styles.
Visitors will access a guidebook that explores the church in sections, emphasising its high-quality architectural features, stained-glass, and imaginative mosaics. This information is supplemented by a YouTube video accessible on its website – http://episcopalnewlands.org.uk/about-us-2/. This wonderful building is cherished by those who know it.
Please visit and enjoy its architecture, explore its hidden details, and pause for some quiet reflection.
