The Arlington Baths Club is the oldest member-run swimming pool in Europe. You can see this ‘A’ listed building housing: a skylit swimming pool and a magnificent Turkish Bath, Glasgow’s homage to The Alhambra in Granada. This Victorian bathing complex was constructed over several decades by eminent architects of the time, expanding and changing as the city of Glasgow grew. We’ve survived since 1870 through world wars, near bankruptcies, epidemics, and the arrival of the motorway. Our volunteers will guide you through this working Victorian leisure complex describing why the Arlington lead to the development of many more swimming complexes across the UK, who the original members were and some surprise guest visitors over our more than 150 year history. We’re All Here: Diversity and Diaspora: this year we also have an exhibition about the Rev. A H Geyer, an immigrant from Austria-Hungary in the 1880’s, come find out about his influence on the city, his art work and the wider German speaking community that developed in Glasgow at the time.
