Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow was founded in 1599, bringing clinical specialties together to provide support to healthcare professionals and improve patient care. Since its foundation, the College has resided at several buildings throughout the city centre, from the Trongate to St Enoch’s Square. We moved to our current location on St Vincent Street in 1862 when we purchased 242 St Vincent Street, a mansion house built for a wealthy merchant in the 1820s. Over the years the College has expanded to incorporate the neighbouring mansions in the row. On your visit you will be able to explore the many rooms of the College, including our College Hall, which was built by famous Glasgow architect, JJ Burnet. Items from our heritage collection which include surgical instruments, rare books, and archives will be out on display for you to enjoy. You will have the chance to see JJ Audubon’s ‘Birds of America’, our latest exhibition about Glasgow Super-Surgeon, William Macewen, and a brand new portrait of our first female Fellow, Jamini Sen. Jamini was born in West Bengal and worked as physician to the Nepalese Royal Family. She became a Fellow of our College in 1912.

Our College was founded in 1599 with the grant of a charter from King James VI of Scotland to surgeon, Peter Lowe. The charter established a body to examine all professing the art of surgery in Glasgow and South West Scotland. Uniquely for the time, the charter, as well as creating a body which surgeons could join, also allowed physicians to be members. The College remains the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the UK and we have been supporting our members for over 420 years by setting the highest possible standards of health care. We provide ongoing career support to our membership, which now also includes dentists and practitioners from the fields of travel and podiatric medicine, through education, training, professional development, and assessment. As a charitable organisation, we make a positive contribution to the wider community. Our College library, archive and museum hold a variety of public events and opens its doors to allow everyone access to its collections of historic treasures. These collections help to tell the story of the College, of its place in Glasgow, and of Scottish medical history. In 2015, we achieved full Museum Accreditation from Museums Galleries Scotland on behalf of Arts Council England.

EXIT is a fully operating DIY, independent and artist run club and arts space which was opened in September 2023. The building on Maxwell St was once home to Fury Murry’s in the late 80s and 90s, and then repurposed into a strip club. The space has a lot of character, with the majority of the strip club interiors remaining largely intact. EXIT has a strong DIY ethos, platforming and growing the local scene and creative community here in Glasgow.
