Glasgow Requiem: Necropolis Flower Memorial Planting
Join Aproxima Arts, Scouse Flowerhouse, and Anniesland College for a special planting event at Glasgow’s Necropolis. Help plant 33,000 spring bulbs as a living memorial, with live music, poetry, and food. This event honours thousands laid to rest in unmarked graves at the Necropolis. Participants will process from the Bridge of Sighs to the Eta Compartment, Glasgow’s largest common grave, for an act of remembrance adding meaning to our collective past. The planting will be accompanied by music from cello and violin duo Sequoia, poetry by Makar Kathleen Jamie, and words from celebrants Gerrie and Susan Douglas-Scott. A 2-metre memorial wreath by Ruby Flowers, woven from wildflowers, will be created on-site, and a water dedication from the ancient Molendinar Burn will be included. The event concludes with shared food at a pop-up café, with dishes made by Glasgow Clyde College and Ibrahim Alissi, who runs Kitchen Glasgow, using potatoes grown by young asylum seekers and refugees at Anniesland College. Part of Glasgow Requiem, a three-year program by Aproxima Arts exploring the city’s mediaeval roots, pre-industrial history and founding mythologies. Donations truly welcome!
