Music for a Medieval Roman Workshop
The Roman de Silence is one of the most intriguing works of literature of the Middle Ages: gravitating around Silence, a noble girl raised up as a boy, it has invited opposing interpretations and has been defined as both subversive and conservative, as both queer and heteronormative. Through group singing, this workshop will lead participants through various repertoires from 12th and 13th -century England and France contemporary with the Roman de Silence, and explore how these can help us illuminate the tensions inherent in the literary work. Part of Explorathon. Recommended for age 16+. No knowledge of medieval music or music notation required.
