Victoria Park Heritage Trail

Meeting Point: The main gates on Victoria Park Drive North
Nearest Address to Meeting Point: Victoria Park Drive North, G14 9RN
Trail Postcode: G14 9RN

Let me take you on a journey to explore: the heritage and culture from prehistoric times to the present day; in addition to the wildlife of Victoria Park, Whiteinch, Glasgow.

We will start at the main Gates, commemorating Queen Victoria’s jubilee and the opening of the Park in 1887 by our Victorian predecessors and think about what led them to establish our Park. We will help you remember and commemorate those who died on the SS Daphne and both the World Wars of the twentieth century.

Our visit takes in: the former bandstands; the SS Daphne memorial, to the estimated 124 dead; the famous Fossil Grove, with fossil tree trunks from approximately 325 million years ago, discovered when the Park was being constructed; the Oswald Clock; the ponds both boating and duck; in addition to the fine ornamental formal gardens.

At the listed Cenotaph by Francis William Doyle-Jones (1873-1938) we shall reflect on the impact of the two world wars to the local community.

We finish at the sadly disused Partick Curling Pavilion. The club was formed in 1842 and the C listed Arts & Crafts style pavilion dates from 1900.

We have a webinar on Sunday. Please, enjoy both.
