World War Two War walks return for a 5th time at Glasgow Doors Open Days, with new exciting stories and facts. Discover how Glasgow’s iconic open spaces George Square and Glasgow Green were transformed by the culture of war. Walking from ‘King’s Square’ down to ‘People’s Park’ hear hidden gems of wartime facts about Glasgow’s historical streetscape. Boasting 200 years of urban development both, spaces were vital to the war effort. Municipal and commercial properties enveloped them and both were focal points for open-air events. They hosted air raid shelters, trenches, static water tanks and barrage balloons strategically placed to protect people and property. Learn their location and hear stories uncovered about ARP exercises and air raids. Think George Square and Glasgow Green, think ceremonies and open-air events. With the need to raise war funds, relay information and keep up morale; both open spaces have a cornucopia of stories to divulge. Tales of Lancaster bombers and enemy planes on show, Home Guard parades, royalty having a ‘fly cup of tea’, visits made by Monty and Winston, ‘Holidays at Home’ carnivals, Glasgow’s ‘great escapers’, and V.E. Day celebrations await you.

ORGANISATION
Organised by: Kevin Morrison
Kevin recently graduated with a PhD from Glasgow Caledonian University. His research focused on how Glasgow’s properties, networks, open spaces and human capital were utilised for the war effort during World War Two. Kevin’s award winning trail (Inspiring City Tour 2018) is back for a fifth time. This year he wants to share with you exciting anecdotal stories about George Square and Glasgow Green (and properties in-between both locations). Participants are invited to share their own family stories of wartime Glasgow as we did in previous trails when we 'walked and talked’.
