Couper Institute

Couper Institute
For many years, the Couper Institute has been at the very heart of Cathcart. Come on our tour or drop in to share your memories of the Couper! The Institute holds memories for many people who grew up in Cathcart: it has hosted countless weddings, birthday parties, dance shows and so much more, shaping the lives of Cathcart residents down the ages. The B-listed building was designed in 1887 by internationally renowned architect James Sellars. It is a legacy of the Couper brothers, who ran Millholm paper mill on the banks of the White Cart River. James and Robert Couper were significant and forward-thinking employers for their time, providing jobs for many people in the area, and paying sick pay when staff were ill: unusual for the era. You’ll get a chance to tour the building and learn about the Couper’s history. We’ll also have a Memory Space, where we’ll be sharing pictures and information about the Couper. Perhaps you can share your own memories – we’d love you to bring pictures or stories of the part the Couper has played in part of your family’s life. This event is a collaboration between Cathcart and District Community Council, and Glasgow Life.
