The Faculty of Procurators (or lawyers) in Glasgow was established before 1668. The building, into which the Faculty moved in 1857, is a two-storeyed building with 3 façades designed by the architect Charles Wilson (1810-1863) who also designed some of Glasgow’s finest Italianate buildings. The Faculty building is one of the oldest in Glasgow, still used for its original purpose. Usually only open to members, the building houses an important collection of legal texts and is still used as a working space and library by lawyers today. Things to look out for on your Doors Open Day visit – • The keystones above each of the 14 windows and the intricate plasterwork inside depict the faces of famous lawyers. • The Main Library on the first floor is described as “one of the most exquisite halls in the West of Scotland”. Nine busts of former members of the Faculty add historic character to the library. • The picturesque Small Library on the ground floor is a favourite of visitors to the building. Admire its striking stained-glass window commissioned by John K. Clark for the bicentenary of the Faculty’s first Royal Charter in 1996 as well as the beautiful mortification boards above.
