Glasgow Royal Infirmary is one of the oldest functioning acute hospitals in the UK. The original building was designed by the Adam brothers. A newer building, a category B listed building and the one that is familiar to current Glasgow residents was designed by James Miller and officially opened in 1914. There have been other additions over the years, by Sir Basil Spence and Wylie Shanks.
Following on from the first participation in 2020, we have put together a short film. Physical access to this historic building is still limited for members of the public. Some of the areas featured are limited access to everyone, including most staff members.
Friends of Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a charity whose main aim is to celebrate the heritage and history of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. We are currently working on a Friends of GRI museum space which should be completed in September 2021.
