In 1921, the story goes, an astute businesswoman by the name of Margaret ‘Maggie’ McIver created a safe place for people to trade from their barrows in Calton, in the East End of Glasgow. What started off as a minimal outdoor trading post for a few locals would become the world-famous Barras market.
Take a wander and learn more about the remarkable Maggie and the other people and businesses who made the area what it was. More than a shopping centre, the market was a thriving entertainment hub, a meeting place, the beating and banter-filled heart of the Glaswegian community.
Barras100 was a yearlong arts and heritage programme, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the world-famous Barras Market in 2021.
Barras100 was produced by Articulate Cultural Trust and Friends of The Pipe Factory, in partnership with Margaret McIver Ltd.
This project is indebted to Tom Joyes and Peter Mortimer, who’s knowledge and generosity have been invaluable.
Barras100 was supported by Glasgow City Heritage Trust.
