Football’s Square Mile – The World’s Biggest Open-Air Football Museum

Football’s Square Mile - The World’s Biggest Open-Air Football Museum
‘Football’s Square Mile’ is the world’s most important football heritage site and the biggest open-air football museum on the planet. It has 21 sites stretching across Glasgow, from Glasgow City in the North to Cathcart in the South, and runs West to East across Pollokshields, Queen’s Park, Crosshill, and Mount Florida. Graeme Brown and Lindsay Hamilton will explain Football’s Square Mile, which encompasses the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Hampden and birthplaces of the Glasgow Football Club Titans: Queen’s Park, 3rd Lanark, Rangers, and Celtic. Alexander Watson Hutton’s birthplace is marked in the Gorbals – this pioneering Scot emigrated to Argentina and is considered the father of Argentinian Football. Hugh MacColl, buried in Cathcart Cemetery, was captain of Spain’s first football club – Sevilla FC, and there is the trailblazing Rose Reilly, who won the World Cup with Italy and has a pub named after her in Govanhill. We will blow your mind with stories of the grand architects of the ‘Scotch Game’, which transcended international boundaries and taught the World how to play football. This cart-upending story will finish by explaining our ultimate mission to make this a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
