Japanese Calligraphy Workshop

Screenshot 1
A Japanese Calligraphy workshop for Glasgow Doors Open Days will offer you an insight into this beautiful traditional skill of writing with an ink and a brush. During the workshop you will have a chance to speak to Kanae about the art of Japanese calligraphy writing and you will be taught step by step to write your own name using Japanese characters. You will be shown how to use the traditional brush and ink to write with, and you will be able to take your artwork home with you if you wish. The workshop will take part in the exhibition room Advanced Research Centre building (University of Glasgow) and whilst learning a new skill you will also be able to examine a Japanese kimono and works by migrant from different communities of Glasgow. The Threading Stories members will be displaying works in textile, print and sandpainting that talk about their traditions and skills that are helping them through difficult times and the happy ones. You will also see a wonderful exhibition of zine posters crated by migrants for the Migrant Voice and have an opportunity to read their written contribution. Glasgow is a fantastically diverse place, welcoming all. The workshop will be a wonderful opportunity to explore not only Japanese culture but to gain a real insight into the diversity and reach contribution of migrants to the city culture.
