Springburn – Off the Rails / Back on Track

Off the Rails / Back on Track
To celebrate 50 years of the Scottish Society of Playwrights and in association with Springburn Winter Gardens Trust, playwright and SSP@50 Fellow Jack Dickson takes theatre into the community with a site-specific Spoken Landscape showcasing multicultural Springburn and its glorious heritage in the words of those who know this vibrant area best. A love letter. A provocation. A rallying call. 2024 marks 5 years since the closure of the beloved “Caley” Caledonian Railway at the historic St Rollox works in Charles Street. For nearly two centuries, the world came to Springburn for all its locomotive needs. 200 years on, the world still comes to Springburn…for very different reasons. Generated through a series of Community Creative Writing Workshops. Held throughout North East Glasgow in July, this piece of living theatre will premiere in the shadow of the former Winter Gardens in Springburn Park as a rehearsed, script-in-hand reading by a professional director and actors. The Spoken Landscape will then go on to form the bedrock of a new community play by Jack in late 2025. The Rehearsed Reading will last approximately 30 minutes, followed by hot soup.
