The Govan Stones Archaeology Open Day

The Govan Stones Archaeology Open Day
On Saturday 21st September, Govan Old is having an archaeological open day (10:00am – 4:00pm) with a range of family friendly activities and historical re-enactment and displays from Cumbraland, a living history group which showcases the daily life of ancient Strathclyde and the Viking-Age. Learn about the recent excavations at Govan Old and find out the plans for future work. There will be artefact handling activities during the day as well as an opportunity to see any new discoveries from the Dig. At 12:30 there will be a short tour of the graveyard by our staff and volunteers discussing the site’s origins, developments, symbols and archaeological discoveries. There will be tours of the Govan Stones and museum every half hour, starting at 11:30am. At 3pm we are having a book launch and Q&A with Martin Donaghy, author of The Vinegar Letters. Set in the mid-1820s, the Vinegar Letters is an historical novel that apart from giving a lively account of one of the most famous scandals of the era, also introduces the reader to the fascinating customs, mores, and political shenanigans of a time of great social change.
