PhD student Kevin is back this year continuing the theme ‘One street, in one city in World War Two’. This time he shares snapshots mined from archives, newspapers, books and films of the adjustments made in wartime to shops and department stores and the shopping experience of customers as you walk down Sauchiehall Street from the premises of Knit-to-fit Wear Ltd to Lumley’s Sports Store. Many of the buildings and retailers are no longer there, but the stories and anecdotes explained on the trail will bring them to life for you. Find out how the introduction of a Purchase Tax brought on a weekend of frenzied panic buying. What was it like to shop for Christmas in wartime? Air Raid Precautions, blackout regulations, shortages and rationing, depletion of staff how did Boots, Copeland and Lye, Daly & Sons, Hendersons, M & S, Pettigrew & Stephens and Watt Bros cope? Find out about the shopping experience of customers who were encouraged to shop early and bring their own wrapping paper; what were they purchasing in wartime? What was the purpose of British Restaurants? Learn about in store demonstrations delivered by the Ministry of Food and ‘Sew and Save’ customer competitions.

Kevin is a final year PhD student at Glasgow Caledonian University who is researching the buildings, open spaces, networks and human capital that were utilised in aid of the war effort in Glasgow during World War Two. Kevin’s award winning trail (Inspiring City Tour 2018) is back for a fourth year. Kevin’s research has unearthed interesting stories about the buildings on the war walk, with new locations added so previous war walkers can enjoy the walk anew. Participants are invited to share their own family stories of wartime Glasgow as we did in previous trails when we ‘walked and talked’.
