Friends of Glasgow Necropolis
The Glasgow Necropolis embodies Glasgow at the height its power as the Second City of the British Empire, over 37 acres with 50,000 people interred from engineers, artist, iron founders, inventors, ship builders, locomotive makers, scientists, poets, factory owners, and business people of Victorian Glasgow are buried here. Their monuments were designed by famous architects and sculptors of the time such as Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Necropolis was the first ornamental garden cemetery in Scotland with a landscape inspired by Pere Lachaise in Paris. It is included in Historic Scotland’s inventory if Gardens and Designed Landscapes. The Necropolis is also home to many thousands of ordinary Glaswegians, many of whom are buried in unmarked graves. As part of Doors Open 2024, The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis (The Friends) are delighted to offer informal and informative walking tours undertaken by our friendly and knowledgeable volunteer tour guides.

It is a fully unpaid volunteer led organisation, all of whom give their time, enthusiasm and expertise to achieve their objectives of advancing the public understanding and enjoyment of the Glasgow Necropolis and working with Glasgow City Council for the conservation and restoration of this magnificent Victorian Cemetery, for the benefit and amenity of the public, be they citizens of Glasgow or visitors to the city. Membership is open to all interested persons aged 18 years and over.
