With a hugely ambituous vision, and a pile of reclaimed wood but with no money, artist Stephen Skrynka set to work alone in his shed throughout the whole of lockdown. When lockdown eased he moved the work to Barclay Curle with the generous support of the building’s owners. (A grade A listed shipyard building from 1913 hugely influenced by Peter Behrens’ 1909 AEG turbine factory in Berlin) One by one, Stephen was joined by an enthusiastic and devoted team of volunteers from all walks of life who threw themselves into the work.
This handmade circular wooden building was sculpted using hand tools and traditional hand cut joints, no nails. Purposefully with no drawings or plans, it evolved organically. Made with love and great skill, so far it has taken over 12,000 hours to build. The Revelator is truly nomadic and over time will journey around Scotland. “We are the amateur cathodynes; positive, skint and fiercely independent, quietly ignoring the corporate, the professional and the anodyne” (nb The Revelator has no connection with Glasgow Wood Recycling on the same site)
We are a group of volunteers, independent, unfunded and unafiliated to any other organisations.
