The Briggait in Merchant City – formerly the city of Glasgow’s fish market of over a century – is made up of a series of soaring market halls, dating from 1873, 1899 and 1904 respectively. It is a recognisable landmark on the city’s skyline, as the halls incorporate the Merchant’s Steeple Clocktower, dating back to 1655.
Around 1000sqm of The Briggait’s market halls remain empty and undeveloped, their condition deteriorating, and the ornate entrance from Clyde Street obscured. To ensure these valuable assets are conserved and put back into public use, Wasps Studios is now working with Clarks Contracts to restore and transform the remaining empty 1899 and 1904 Halls. We hope to save these historic sites and develop more space for creativity, more markets, more places to meet and more things to do, for the people of Glasgow and visitors to the city.
Led by Clark Contracts and Wasps Studios.
PLEASE NOTE: SENSIBLE FOOTWEAR IS REQUIRED FOR GOING ON THIS TOUR. NO SANDALS OR OPEN TOED SHOES. THIS SPACE IS A CONSTRUCTION SITE AT PRESENT, AND SAFETY IS IMPERATIVE.
