If you were a late Victorian and wanted a Gothic Lighthouse, a Doge’s Palace, a ballroom in your floating imperial palace or a suitably turreted Highland Castle, William Leiper was your go-to architect. In fact he designed at least one of almost everything, from churches to offices to houses that were simply very good to live in.
Although less well known today than some, Leiper was highly regarded by his contemporaries and made a significant contribution to our cityscape. He was one of the first of our modern architects, working out of a purpose built office rather from at home.
In this illustrated online talk I will introduce you to this fascinating fellow and some of his buildings. I’ll try to explain how he created a uniquely Scottish version of the Victorian Gothic Revival, taking ideas drawn from Walter Scott and others, with a touch of Japanese, adding his own signature humour with things such as stone dogs and green men.
