The drone film was shot early on a calm and sunny August morning in 2020.
Starting over the Kibble Palace in the Botanic Gardens, we are taken to the Sixty Steps by way of the tree lined River Kelvin valley.
We learn from the commentary about the local history, not only of The Sixty Steps, but of the Kelvin when it was a centre of small industries. We also learn of the pivotal role The Sixty Steps and the original Queen Margaret Bridge, known as Walker’s Bridge, played in the development of the North bank of the Kelvin. The area up to Maryhill which was already a burgh in its own right was largely rural when the bridge Steps and wall were constructed in the early 1870s.
Only the bridge piers can be seen now as Walker’s Bridge was demolished in 1971.
You will see some of Thomson’s idiosyncratic additions to the wall such as a mysterious doorway, arrow slits and what can only be described as a fireplace.
Enjoy the lovely views down to the Kelvin valley from the restored pillars of the Belle Vue lookout point.
The film beautifully shows what a special area of the city lies on the banks of the Kelvin in the West End of Glasgow.
The Greek Thomson Sixty Steps Preservation Trust is a charitable body made up of local residents and supporters from the wider community whose goal is the historic restoration of Alexander Greek Thomson’s Sixty Steps and imposing retaining wall.
The Steps was one of Thomson’s last commissions and his only civic structure.
As well as being of architectural significance, this B listed edifice is of local historical interest as it played an crucial part in the development of North Kelvinside at a time when Glasgow was expanding at a great rate. Undoubtedly a city in flux !

Glasgow Royal Infirmary is one of the oldest functioning acute hospitals in the UK. The original building was designed by the Adam brothers.
