This film offers a snapshot into the built and social heritage of Elder Park, Govan, and tells the story of the recent restoration of the Elder Park entranceway and K13 Memorial.
Until recently the grand entrance to the park was in a desperate need for repair. The masonry was eroded and covered in moss, the cast iron gates had lost most of their elements and the lamps that once illuminated the way into the park were missing. The crafts people and others involved explain the conservation-led approach taken to revive a once grand entranceway and repair a memorial to lives lost in a catastrophic submarine disaster. Community members share their perspectives on what their park means to them, and the positive impact that public realm improvement works can have on individuals and communities.
The restoration of Elder Park’s Govan Road Entrance and the K13 Memorial were delivered as part of Govan Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative in collaboration with Glasgow Building Preservation Trust with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and Glasgow City Council.
The Central Govan Action Plan (CGAP), is a community-led, investment and development framework guiding the physical regeneration of Central Govan. Govan Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative, or the THI for short, was set up in 2009 to help regenerate Govan by repairing, restoring and preserving the area’s exceptional heritage features and historic buildings. It is a grant giving initiative funded by Glasgow City Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and in 2016 a Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme was also incorporated funded by Historic Environment Scotland.
