A self-guided digital trail from the Glasgow Science Centre along the River Clyde to Glasgow Green. Learn about the bridges of the Clyde, old and new, simple and grand, the engineering behind them and much more.
Glasgow’s bridges connect the city, enabling us to cross numerous roads, railways, rivers and canals. They reflect the city’s development, flourishing in the 18th and 19th centuries making Glasgow one of the most important cities in the British Empire. The demand for better connections resulted in bridges being built which in turn encouraged further trade and prosperity.
The bridges also reflect the story of transport; from the pedestrian and horse traffic of the middle-ages through the railway mania of the 19th century, the growth of cars in the 20th century, to today’s need to reduce pollution and reliance on fossil fuels and focus on more active ways of travelling.
The Clyde Bridges have bridged the years and this trail tells their story.
Institution of Civil Engineers promotes and advances civil engineering around the globe. Our members are the civil engineers that design and build the world around you; the roads and railways, schools, offices, hospitals, water and power supplies, the kinds of things that we take for granted but would find life very hard to live without. Civil engineers are at the forefront of the fight against the effects of climate change, working to create a more sustainable future for us all.
