A short walk exploring this hidden architectural gem, with its secret garden in Glasgow’s west end. You will hear the story of local businessman, John Ewing Walker and how his ambition in the 1870s to develop the north bank of the river resulted in a commission to Alexander “Greek ” Thomson, the top architect of the day. The result is a unique structure combining practical function with flights of fancy and a tranquil garden and stunning views down to the Kelvin valley. This B listed edifice is Thomson’s only public structure and is recognised as a rare example of his work.
The Greek Thomson Sixty Steps Preservation Trust is a charitable body made up of local residents and supporters from the wider community whose goal is the historic restoration of Alexander Greek Thomson’s Sixty Steps and imposing retaining wall.
The Steps were one of Thomson’s last commissions and his only civic structure.
As well as being of architectural significance, this B listed edifice is of local historical interest as it played a crucial part in the development of North Kelvinside at a time when Glasgow was expanding at a great rate.
Undoubtedly a city in flux !
