How do you make a bandstand? Celebrating a Glasgow icon – 100 years of Kelvingrove Bandstand

Photo of a gig at Kelvingrove bandstand
Kelvingrove Bandstand and amphitheatre celebrates its 100th birthday this year. Designed by James Millar, it was built as part of the city’s efforts to provide accessible, ‘morally uplifting’ outdoor entertainment and cultural events for the public. By the 1990s, the bandstand had fallen into disrepair and was closed, facing potential demolition. Fortunately, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, working in partnership with the Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, and the local community, developed a conservation and business plan and raised the necessary funds to restore and modernise the venue. The bandstand reopened in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and has since become a popular venue for live music, festivals, and events, continuing its legacy as a cherished part of Glasgow’s cultural heritage. Find out from Glasgow Building Preservation Trust just how you ‘make a bandstand’ and hear more about the highs and lows of renovating and renewing historic buildings.

ORGANISATION
Organised by: Glasgow Building Preservation Trust
Founded in 1982, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust is a charity that repairs and restores historic buildings for new uses, saving many of the city’s best loved buildings from destruction. The Trust also supports community heritage projects, from celebrating Barras market traders to exploring Glasgow's roller-skating history. In 1990, we introduced the Doors Open Days festival to the UK and have organised the Glasgow event ever since.
