How do you make a bandstand? Celebrating a Glasgow icon – 100 years of Kelvingrove Bandstand
Kelvingrove Bandstand and amphitheatre celebrates its 100th birthday this year. Designed by James Millar, it was built as part of the city’s efforts to provide accessible, ‘morally uplifting’ outdoor entertainment and cultural events for the public. By the 1990s, the bandstand had fallen into disrepair and was closed, facing potential demolition. Fortunately, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, working in partnership with the Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, and the local community, developed a conservation and business plan and raised the necessary funds to restore and modernise the venue. The bandstand reopened in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and has since become a popular venue for live music, festivals, and events, continuing its legacy as a cherished part of Glasgow’s cultural heritage.
