Centre for Contemporary Arts

Centre for Contemporary Arts
The Centre for Contemporary Arts is Glasgow’s hub for the arts. The year-round programme includes exhibitions, public engagement events, film, music, literature, spoken word, festivals, Gaelic and performance. The category A listed building fronting on to Sauchiehall Street was completed in 1868 and designed by the major Glasgow architect, Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. From 1975 until 1991, it was home to the Third Eye Centre. It’s first director was the playwright Tom McGrath and the Third Eye was to play a key role in the cultural life of the city with a local, national and international focus. In 1992, the Third Eye Centre was re-named the Centre for Contemporary Arts. The CCA built upon and expanded the Third Eye Centre’s broad and experimental programming. Like the Third Eye, the aim was to encourage a diverse audience to experience the arts. In 2001, a major redevelopment of the building by Glasgow architects Page\Park opened to the public. A Georgian villa and another stone property behind the Greek Thomson building were included within the building complex. Visitors to exhibitions, theatre and other events now enjoy a greatly enlarged, open, bright and airy space.
